What is the specific protection level of safety shoes?

    February 6th, 2025

In various fields such as industrial production and construction, safety shoes serve as a crucial line of defense to protect workers’ feet. Given the diverse working environments and potential risks, selecting safety shoes with appropriate protection levels is essential. The protection levels of safety shoes are strictly classified according to international standards, encompassing features such as impact resistance, puncture resistance, anti-static properties, oil and slip resistance, and more, providing targeted protection for different types of work.

    1. Basic Safety (EN ISO 20345:2011):

This is the minimum safety standard for footwear in Europe. Shoes meeting this standard offer:

    • Toe protection: 200 joules impact resistance (equivalent to a 20kg weight dropped from 1 meter).

    • Compression resistance: 15kN (withstands 1.5 tons of pressure).

    • Puncture resistance: 1100N (protects against sharp objects penetrating the sole).

    2. Additional Protection Levels:

Beyond the basic requirements, safety shoes can offer additional protection against specific hazards:

    • Water resistance (WR): Keeps feet dry in wet conditions.

    • Oil and fuel resistance (FO): Provides slip resistance on oily surfaces.

    • Antistatic properties (A): Dissipates static electricity, reducing the risk of sparks.

    • Energy absorption in the heel (E): Absorbs impact, reducing fatigue and risk of injury.

    • Penetration resistance (P): Offers higher puncture resistance than the basic standard.

    • Heat resistance (HRO): Withstands contact heat up to 300°C for 1 minute.

    • Cold resistance (CI): Insulates against cold temperatures down to -20°C.

    3. How to choose the Right Protection Level:

The appropriate protection level depends on the specific workplace hazards. Consider factors such as:

    • Risk of falling objects: Choose shoes with higher impact resistance.

    • Sharp objects on the ground: Opt for shoes with puncture-resistant soles.

    • Slippery surfaces: Select shoes with oil and fuel resistance.

    • Electrical hazards: Ensure shoes have antistatic properties.

The protection level of industrial safety shoes is a critical factor in ensuring workplace safety.
