Types of Safety Shoes: Safety Footwear Classifications by Function

    يوليو 7th, 2026

Safety shoes are essential personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to protect workers from workplace hazards such as falling objects, sharp materials, electrical risks, slippery surfaces, chemicals, and extreme temperatures. Based on their functions and protection features, safety footwear can be divided into different types, including steel toe safety shoes, insulated footwear, anti-static shoes, waterproof boots, and chemical-resistant safety boots.

Safety Shoe Classifications According to EN ISO 20345

The EN ISO 20345 standard classifies safety shoes according to their protection level and additional safety features.

    S1 Safety Shoes (Basic Protection)
Designed for dry working environments, S1 safety shoes feature impact-resistant toe caps, antistatic properties, heel energy absorption, and closed-heel designs. They are suitable for warehouses, indoor factories, and assembly areas.

    S2 Safety Shoes (Water-Resistant Protection)
S2 safety shoes add water-resistant uppers (WPA) based on S1 protection. They are ideal for workplaces with occasional moisture exposure, such as cleaning operations, food processing, and semi-outdoor environments.

    S3 Safety Shoes (Outdoor Protection)
S3 safety shoes provide enhanced protection with puncture-resistant midsoles and slip-resistant outsoles with deeper tread patterns. They are widely used in construction sites, logistics, manufacturing, and outdoor workplaces.

S7 Safety Shoes (Advanced Waterproof Protection)
As a high-protection class under EN ISO 20345:2022, S7 safety shoes provide advanced waterproof performance (WR), durability, and all-weather protection. They are suitable for mining, heavy industry, and harsh wet environments.

Main Types of Safety Shoes by Function

    1. Steel Toe Safety Shoes
Designed to protect toes from impact and crushing hazards caused by falling objects or heavy equipment. They are commonly used in construction, manufacturing, warehouses, and logistics.

    2. Insulated Safety Shoes
Provide electrical protection by reducing the risk of electric shock in hazardous electrical environments. They are widely used in power plants, electrical maintenance, and utility industries.

    3. Anti-Static and Conductive Safety Shoes
These shoes control static electricity buildup and help prevent risks caused by electrostatic discharge. They are suitable for electronics, chemical, and explosion-sensitive environments.

    4. Heat-Resistant and Foundry Safety Shoes
Designed for high-temperature workplaces, these safety shoes protect against heat, molten metal splashes, and mechanical hazards in steel plants, welding, and metal processing industries.

    5. Waterproof and Chemical-Resistant Safety Boots
Featuring water resistance and protection against oils, acids, or chemicals, these boots are ideal for mining, agriculture, chemical industries, and outdoor operations.

    6. Cold-Weather Safety Shoes
Designed for low-temperature environments, they provide thermal insulation and protection for cold storage, winter construction, and outdoor work.
